DC Hero Appearances

Who is most popular of them all?

About This Data

This data includes name, number of appearances, page ID, wiki URL, ID (secrete or not), Align (good or bad character), eye color, hair color, sex, first appearnce, and more for each character in the DC universe. With this information, you can really understand a lot about any character, or even groups of characters. We could look at only the older characters, or even compare the older ones to the newer ones. We can look at how physical attributes like eye and hair color are used to signify whether a character is good or bad. We can also look at how these attributes change over time. We gathered this data here.

Things to try in the data set:

Group Data

Roll data up into groups of values within a column to look for trends. Place groups inside of groups to drill down another level, then group again!

Filter Data

Use the filters to narrow down the file to the values that interest you most. Only show values that include, exclude, contain, or are greater than a value (to name a few). Then add another level of filtering with AND / OR logic to dive deeper.

Search Data

Not sure where to start? Use search to find values in the file and then go back and filter or group the entire data set down to just that value.

Of the 1509 “good characters” in the DC universe with specified eye color the top three are: blue eyes (542), brown eyes (445), and black eyes (162). The most common eye color for any character (good or bad) in the DC universe is Blue. The rarest is Amber.

By using the group function in our data, we can see that there are slightly more bad characters than good ones in the DC universe. Maybe because they are expendable?

Key Insights

Due to the release of DC comics “The Batman” in March, and the anticipated release of Aquaman 2, we decided to take a look at some DC superhero (and villain) data. Many of you may be wondering if Amber Heard will have a role in Aquaman 2 as she did in the first film. And,  “Despite a pressure campaign by Depp fans to have Heard cut from the film, she will still play Mera in the upcoming sequel to Aquaman, set for release in March 2023. During testimony at the defamation trial, Walter Hamada, President of DC-based film production, confirmed that the actress was still in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (source). And, while this data does not touch on the drama occurring between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, it is still very interesting.

So, what is the DC universe? The DC Universe (DCU) is the fictional shared universe where most stories in American comic book titles published by DC Comics take place. DC superheroes such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Aquaman are from this universe, as well as teams such as the Justice League and the Teen Titans. It also contains well-known supervillains such as Lex Luthor, the Joker, Sinestro, Harley Quinn, Reverse-Flash, Darkseid, General Zod, Penguin, the Riddler, Catwoman, Ra’s al Ghul, Bane, and Two-Face.
