What is a PCAP file?

Packet capture (PCAP) files usually contain the packet data of a network. Therefore, these files mainly analyze specific data's network characteristics.

Packet capturing helps IT teams detect intrusion attempts, security issues, network misuse, packet loss, and network congestion. It enables them to capture data packets directly from the computer network. The process is known as "packet sniffing." A .pcap file is common for network analyzers like Wireshark. These files are created to collect and record packet data from a network. The .pcap file comprises a series of packets collected and recorded to create the file. The packets can be seen as individual pieces of information that make up a single communication between two devices on a network, similar to how words form sentences or paragraphs.
